Cartegena’s Heritage

Cartagena’s Walled Old City is a World Heritage Site-a maze of cobbled alleys, balconies covered in bougainvillea, and massive churches that cast their shadows across leafy plazas. Cartagena is hard to walk away from- it seizes you in its aged clutches and refuses to let go. The Walls of Cartegena have great historical Significance. A project that took nearly two centuries to complete, the Walls were finished to completion in 1796 to defend the city against numerous Pirate attacks. An Architect of Italian decent Carlos De Roda Antonelli was a pioneer in orchestrating the first stage of construction for the walls of Cartegena. Today they stand beautiful and bright with Italian and Spanish influence.
